acetyl coA is basically the precursor of ketone bodies which are formed in the liver. now acetyl coA is formed due to degradation of fatty acids. acetyl coA is also a substrate of the TCA cycle which is pathway in the carbohtdrate metabolism. now when there is excessive degradation of fats as in prolonged starvation and diabetes mellitus there is increased formation of acetyl coA all of which cannot be channeled into the TCA cycle and hence forms ketone bodies ie acetoacetate and butyrate and acetone in the liver which causes ketoacidosis(increased ketone bodies in blood, ketone bodies are acidic) and also ketonuria ie ketone bodies in the urine.
