If you want to learn ballroom - this is what you need to start learning. There are no pre-requisites to ballroom. That is, you don't need to learn ballet or anything else first. Foxtrot is one of the ballroom dances btw. Ballroom consists of 9 or 10 dances, depending on style. Most people come to ballroom without prior dance experience, and most of them claim to have no rhytm, just like you. You just need to start with a beginner class. If you took a class and it made you feel like you have no rhythm then the class was probably too advanced for you. Good teacher in beginner class is supposed to explain the music to the students, then explain every step with counts. (Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad ballroom teachers out there).

Here is a website that you can use as a reference: http://www.ballroomdancers.com/Dances/Default.asp
They have demonstration of steps with narrated counts. Just give it some time and patience.

Keep in mind that while beginner American Foxtrot is the simplest dance in terms of getting the rhythm of the steps, International Foxtrot is the hardest. Yeah, it is danced to the same music (International is a bit slower) but the way the steps are designed is very different, or so it seems to beginners. Start out with American Foxtrot to make it easier on yourself.

If you're struggling with rhythm I'd say start out with dances like American Foxtrot, Waltz, Merengue, Nightclub Two-step and Salsa. Salsa, surprisingly, is to learn for a beginner despite of it having the most complicated rhythm. If you and your husband will put your mind to it I'm sure you will be having fun dancing in a month or two.

Ok if you want to learn ballroom its best to try ballet and jazz to understand grace and fluidity... if you want to just learn how to dance to a beat hip hop is the best way. but in all honesty its much different dancing alone than with a person... try swing first to learn each other and how you both move together.

I think it depends on what type of dance you mean. Do you want to learn how to club dance? ball room dance? Tap, ballet, jazz ...is this just for fun? Any kind of dance class that you take will most likely start with basic steps!

A technique class for ballet, beacause ballet can help you with all kinds of dance, and Tecnique classes teach you the basics.

......... you could also try a basic beginner tap class, because tap teaches you alot of rythym, just don't enroll in somehting too hard................... Go slow at first

Good Luck!
