Truth is important because any kind of deceit is exploited by the characters with bad intentions, most notably Wickham but also Lydia and the Misses Bingley; Austen's hatred of shams is notable in these characters, and also in Mrs. Bennet, who while not a liar is concerned to put up a false front, which makes her ridiculous.
