I have annual flowers coming up and some onions. Right now they are covered with leaves and dead weeds. I live in Nebraska and I don't know if I should uncover them? I'm assuming the leaves will protect them in case of frost. What should I do and when should I do it?

I live pretty close to you and I took all the dead stuff off my garden beds a week ago. We've had a few frosty nights but the things that were hardy enough to already be emerging have done fine.

I live in zone 4 Montana I have started uncovering but I am watching the night tempatures closely-My delphiniums are already up about a foot so some of the flowers are going to come up weather you like it or not you just have to protect them if the tempature or the wind chill get too cold but your answering people are right in saying that alot of the perrennials are pretty hardy any way.

Leaves give about 4 degrees of frost protection, but if your plants are coming up, it is probably ok to take the leaves off. I use a rake with metal tines for the big stuff, I have another rake with rubber tines that I use around the plants.

With the way this winter has treated your neck of the woods I'd wait another couple of weeks. The Old Man could easily send you one more storm. But then again, most perennials (annuals you plant each year) and onions are pretty hearty! I'd be more concerned with the more delicate plants though.

always something I wonder about too. is it too early, is it getting to late? i want to uncover them to see them, but don't want them to freeze and be done for the year already. :)
My neighbor has not uncovered hers yet. I uncovered mine. They are both fine. I guess spring plants are hearty and like the chilly weather. If it's in the 60s at least through the day...I'd say uncover them.
Good luck!
