The game of basketball was invented in America. It was invented by a physical education teacher from Canada. His name was James Naismith. Basketball was devised in 1891 by Naismith. Naismith was employed in the job of teaching a high-spirited group of young men in a gym class at the YMCA in Springfiled, Massachusetts; he was instructed to create a new game that would keep the young men in his class busy indoors. This was because the winter was too cold and windy in Springfield to be playing a sport outdoors. Naismith tried to think up a game that would be easy to learn but would be challenging; it had to be one that could be played indoors by a large number of players and that would give a lot of exercise.
Players used a soccer ball. Players had to throw the ball into raised baskets, so he called the game “basketball.” It took Naismith only about an hour to make up the original rules for basketball. There were thirteen of these rules. (Continue)
