Scientific knowledge doesn't, or shouldn't stand still. There is new data accumulated every year. There are new computer models developed every year. The consensus now is that the global dimming that was occurring during the 50's-90's have tempered the increases in global temperatures.
There is not one thermometer that scientists look at and say "wow! It's getting hotter". They look at the amount of sunlight that hits the surface, temperatures around the world going back centuries, ocean temps at various depths and how that affects ocean currents. This mountain of data that is being increased every hear has convinced hundreds of scientists around the world that global warming is real and being caused by human activity. If another group of scientists has come to a different conclusion, let them publish their observational data that supports their conclusions. That's the way it's supposed to work. To make this all about Al Gore is beyond irresponsible and shifts the focus away from what really matters.

There are several factors at work changing the Earth's temperature. Primarily, there are 3 natural cycles the Earth goes through, all of which are currently in the "cool" part, so the Earth should be getting naturally cooler. The second is the effect of humanity, which is pushing in the opposite direction and warming the Earth. If you're interested in reading about it, your local library should have Analog Science Fiction / Science Fact, which has an excellent article on the subject a few months ago.

Global cooling wasn't nearly as successful at raising funds as Global warming. Global warming wasn't even that successful until the left decided they could attribute any change in the weather to it. It's big business now. Global cooling was like the betamax of environmental scare tactics.

The earth enters an ice age every 100,000 years. We are due for one anytime.

Before cooling the earth warms as co2 levels rise. Right now we are warming faster due to man-made co2 emissions. An ice age is coming though.

It wasn't green house gases, it was pollution particles that were blocking out the sun.
But then.... the earth started showing a warming trend, so the alarmists had to find a new scary theory to support in order to be published, get grant money, and win awards and accolades.

They had 20 more years of collecting data and analyzing to revise their conclusions. And in the past 20-30 years, different chemicals are being dumpted into the atmosphere.
The basic issue is still the same -- an excessive amount of specific chemicals (pollution, green houses gases, etc) will cause a change in the atmosphere. That's basic chemistry -- add something to the mix, and the mix changes.
The atmosphere is what traps and relects heat. And how much it traps or reflects is based on its composition. That's basic planetary geology.
What specific chemicals are likely to produce what specific effects is still being evaluated. But the basic fact that dumping huge amounts of chemicals into the air will have some significant effect is something any 5-year old can understand.

The Al Gore camp ran out of votes to recount and didn't have time to invent another internet, so they had to create a new myth.
