Is this not a valid form of speech? Are certain sentences not simply statements that you are to agree with or that lead to another subject?

Because you aren't ANSWERING the question; if you put a question as a supposed "answer" then you are questioning the question.

To answer a question with a question is to show that you have little or no experience with the subject matter or you have little or no education or you are simply socially inept. Be a little bit more of a critical thinker and answer the question. People who do this usually have low self esteem and don't want any one to know they don't understand what they are hearing. Your statement suggests that you are not a very good listener either.

The only way it would not be looked down upon is if you were speaking with a group of philosophers and caused them to look at the issue in a new light. Then they would turn around and ask you a question.

The reason it is frowned upon is when someone is asking a question they want an answer not another question. Sound good? Take care

Because it doesn't answer the question. It is similar to giving an irrelevant or nonsensical answer.

Because it's arrogant and self-centered. What the person is implying is that the question is not worthy of an answer, but that theirs is.
