The Republican Party has been the biggest benefactor of contributions from Philip Morris USA, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and its one-time subsidiary R.J.R. Nabisco, and the parent company of U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. According to the study, Republicans received three-quarters of the donations.

The tobacco companies defended their political contributions. "Those donations are an effort to try and ensure that we can get our side of the story heard," said Seth Moskowitz, a spokesman for R.J. Reynolds

Politicians should not profit from cigarettes. From political contributions, taxes, whatever. I don't blame tobacco companies from giving huge amounts of money to politicians. In the Mob world it's called protection.

John Edwards has really profited from the tobacco industry...check out his multi-million dollar houses he made on the suffering of other people...
