Looking to move out of my apartment I've lived in for 2 years, however I concerned about the cheap paint that was tacked on before we moved in - Will I be responsible for the peeling of it? (I Scotch taped a picture once and when I pulled it off, so cam the paint - cheap!) Secondly, I have a cat as well. The cat has gone a little ballistic scratching at my closet doors, which happen to have this funky 70's style burlap-type fabric on it. How responsible will be for all of that? Does normal wear and tear ever become a issue when living in an apt for 2 years? I just don't wnt to take a huge hit in my multi-thousand dollar security deposit.

I don't think you can be held responsible for paint that is peeling but as far as the cat scratching the doors yes, you will. Can the fabric be replaced on the doors prior to moving?...that will probably be easier and less costly than replacing the doors.

Yes.
We found out you have to allow for normal wear and tear when returning a renters deposit.

Was your cat apart of the lease agreement? If not, it'll affect your deposit.

Even though it was cheap paint. They could paint or paint over the peeled off part and deduct some, maybe all the cost of painting.

For what little it would cost man, just touch it up yourself and fix the door, and save everyone the hassles.

GO TO THE HARDWARE STORE AND GET SPACKLE PASTE. GET A PUTTY KNIFE AND PATCH OVER THE AREAS WHERE THE PAINT CAME OFF. MAKE SURE YOU PULL THE PATCH TIGHT TO THE WALL .YOU DON'T WANT A HUGE LUMP OR EDGE THERE. SAND IT DOWN AFTER IT DRIES..THEY HAVE TO PAINT THE PLACE AFTER U MOVE ANYWAYS. PLUS THE SPACKLE WILL DRY VERY WHITE AND BLEND IN WITH THE WALL COLOR IF IT IS WHITE. FAR AS THE STRING GOES..CAN U GLUE ANY OF WHATS LEFT BACK IN PLACE? IF NOT GO TO THE FABRIC STORE WITH A SMALL PIECE AND TRY TO MATCH IT..BUY SOME AND GLUE IT BACK ON.LAST MAKE SURE..AND I REPEAT MAKE SURE YOU TAKE PICTURES WITH DATES OR VIDEO TAPE WHEN U MOVE. SO MANY PEOPLE GET SCREWED WHEN THEY MOVE CUZ THE OWNER CAN EASILY SAY YOU TRASHED IT. IF THEY KEEP YOUR SECURITY AND DONT GIVE YOU A WRITTEN RECEIPT FOR CHARGES AND WHY THEY KEPT IT..YOU CAN SUE THEM FOR DOUBLE DAMAGES AND GET DOUBLE SECURITY BACK. MAKE SURE YOU GET VIDEO OR SEVERAL DA TED PICTURES. I HAD TO DO THIS BEFORE AND WON 5 THOUSAND ON A 2500 DEPOSIT. KEEP ME AS A CONTACT ..U MAY NEED MORE INFO FROM ME IF THIS HAPPENS.
