Since you've posted this in the Computers & Internet section I'm assuming the question is about colours supported by computers.

Typically they support 32-bit colour, which is 16,777,216 colours, plus an alpha channel.

There may very well be 16.7 million distinct colors or more depending on which color-depth you are discussing ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_depth ). The problem is that based on the source, there are only so many that the human eye can distinguish ( http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2006/JenniferLeong.shtml ).

how many colors are there in the world? the short answer is it depends on the system you use to differentiate them:
120 crayola crayons ( http://www.crayola.com/colorcensus/history/chronology.cfm)
150 named-colors on the web ( http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_colornames.asp )
over 1,000 colors at sherwin-williams ( http://www.sherwin-williams.com/do_it_yourself/paint_colors/paint_color_palette/color_system/ )

I read that the human eye is capable of discerning over ten million different colours and shades. That may be useful to you for your project. But how many colours actually exist? I think it would be impossible to tell.
