Since you are "recognizing" that someone took something from you, it means you had it. Now regarding getting it back, you don't have much control over it....sorry.

No one is stopping you, you can try. It's a free country. But then again how would you know what to take back, if you never had it in the first place?
You can also forget that which never came into being, that is your prerogative However, for women it is difficult for them to forget their miscarriage, as the fetus never came into a human "being".
Might not have answered to your satisfaction, but I sure tried.
Noticed you added on if this is a paradox? Yes it is, as it is a
self contradictory statement which at first seems true

Only if you were guarenteed possession or had a legal claim to this "thing." For example, consider an attempt to thieve an inheritance, or the future offspring of your prized sow.
In either of these instances, and many similar ones, the law does provide protection and recourse for the theft of things not yet ours.

This means you must discover for yourself the values and virtues required to obtain what you never had. Time is the element and that means honest introspection. If you struggle through years to obtain the truth you are morally good. It is an achievement that no one can take from you.

Take a deep breath and engage the moment. If it never was ,it may yet to be. This is a view that never can be where it has never been. You are in idle. It's time to be engaged in now.

Having and not having are both imagination only . In reality no one has anything and every one have every thing .
Taking any thing from anybody is actually taking nothing from nobody .
So getting back anything is getting back nothing in reality .
Catch the point ?

It is impossible to retrieve something you never had. It is impossible for someone to take something
that you do not have. Whatever IT is can still come
into being but you won't be involved.

depends on what your trying to get back that which youve never had. If it is something that could change your life, try your hardest to get it back. If it is someone elses, and they could die without it, keep to yourself.
