It probably won't make the game any faster because now the game has to make calls to a drive that isn't native to where the rest of the program files are located. Your best bet is to upgrade your RAM or maybe clear out other things that you don't use much onto an external hard drive. THEN you'll want to defrag your machine.

The short answer is "probably not". By it's very nature, an external hard drive has to connect to the computer by a serial port or USB port for example. This slows down data transfer when you're looking to increase speed. So, installing an external hard drive won't increase the speed of your game. Consider installing additional RAM (memory) if you have less than 512 MB currently. Other factors are the age of your computer, the processor speed and graphics card memory available.

Most likely not. An internal hard drive will be connected via IDE cables. An external hard drive would be connected via FireWire 800, FireWire 400, USB 2.0, or USB 1.1, all of which would be outperformed by the IDE cable. Thus, data transfer from the external device would become the bottle-neck.

The best investment would be in additional RAM.

moving the game to an external hard drive will not make the game faster. only way to make the game work faster would be to add more RAM

your game data files will be there in the external harddrive

But your .DLL files will be in the default drive(ie internal)

even if your external HDD has faster RPM, it wont make much difference bcos the supporting files will be in the Windows Folder which will be in OS partition which is in the internal Harddriver

And Dont just copy the data from internal drive to external drive bcos your game might stop working and might give lotta errors... Uninstall it first and then re-install it in the external drive

No, your internal HD will run faster than external. To make your games running faster, the best thing is to install the most memory your computer can handle (go to http://crucial.com, scan your computer to find out what is the max you can have, then max it out, you might need to replace your current memory module), and faster CPU would help too. And don't forget, higher graphic memory, better gaming experience. Go at least 256mb for graphic.

Usually external hard drive are slower, not faster, than internal hard drives. You might try adding second internal hard drive. However, usually the best solution is more ram memory and/or more video memory.

that's totally wrong...it will actually make your games run slower because the transfer rate from a usb device (your external drive) is much slower than the transfer rate using ATA or SATA cable (the wire connecting your hard disk and your motherboard).

no it won't speed it up, the sims 2 is ram and graphics intensive you can speed it up by fitting more ram but to get a real worthwhile gain fit a new graphics card with at least 256mb on board memory
I did that for my son and it improved the game no end
