There are goldfish and guppies, of course, but it would be nice to have something a little more exotic. Any suggestions?

you can put a beta in a 2 gallon tank no problem, some people will tell u not to but the truth is they are just as happy in 2 gallons as they are in 20 gallons. also, room temperature water is perfectly fine for a beta (whether they are tropical or not) i worked at super pet and unless ur going to catch ur beta from the wild, it won't need a heater. i wouldn't suggest putting a gold fish in a 2 gallon tank because they do grow quite large and they need a large space to swim. also neon tetras are neat little beautiful fish to keep in a 2 gallon (i would suggest between 2 and 4 neons are okay for 2 gallons)...other than that, most exotic fish should be kept in larger aquariums.

i have a suggestion a paradise fish.

It's a fish that can live in a bowl unfiltered. and there are variety of colors.he like the Betta(and gourami) are known as Labyrinth Fish, are a they are surface breather's so do not need a filter or water movement to oxygenate the water. they can even live awhile out of water as long as there moist( so if they jump out they wont die right away) they can even travel outside water for a small distance. during monsoon season (China and Korea, Asia and Philippines ) they travel from one body of water to another (like puddles) they use there little feelers on the bottom to move around.
you could also go with a gourami but they need more of a steady temperature, unlike the paradise or Betta that can stand a wider range of fluctuation.

the upside is it's something not many people have and you can have more than one depend on the size.

nothing. goldfish need 20gallon each when full grown.
everything that's small enough needs a heater and everything that doesn't need a heater is too big.

a lot of people will say bettas, but bettas are TROPICAL fish, they should be in a heated tank. bettas kept in unheated bowls are listless and often have short lives.

A betta (and even this fish thrives better in a heated aquarium). 2 Gallons is inadequate for almost all fish, most especially goldfish, which are very messy and grow quite large.
