I know that if you are saying 'West Midlands Police Force' for example, you should use a capital P, but if you are writing in general about the police, should you use a capital or a small P?? No guesswork please..I really want to hear from someone who knows for sure. Thanks all!

It is definately small as it is not a name. Just like you would say an ambulance but you would refer to the service as the Ambulance Service. You were right all along.

You would only use a capital P when "police" is part of a proper noun, like the group "The Police" or a title, such as "West Midlands Police Force."

All other times, it is not capitalized.

Use a small p. If you say "The police arrived at my house this morning," you want to use a small "p" because you are not referring to the polic as a specific group. It's not a name or title, it is a general group.

To be capitalized it has to be a specific police--otherwise, small letter.

No "police" is not a proper noun or adjective except when part of a name, exactly as in your example.
