With regard to HP, Dell or Lexmark cartridges, I've had just as much trouble with OEM factory cartridges as I've had with remanufactured or refilled inks.
There's a trick to saving yourself money and headaches though, look for a reputable dealer. You'll also find that their products carry an ISO rating on them.
I recommend remanufactured and not just "refilled" cartridges. There's a difference in that the best remanufacturers fully clean and inspect the cartridge, only use OEM quality inks and, once filled, the cartridges are tested before they're shipped.
Caveat: Be sure to only buy ink cartridges from dealers offering full replacement warranties.
It's quite common for the print heads in a remanufactured cartridge to be clogged when you first open the package. Don't be too worried though, you can still save money and get excellent results with just a little elbow grease.
For tips on priming the cartridge or clearing a clogged print head, check out the printer help page at Inkjet Oasis.

Best check this out... I have NOT touched my cartridges since last xmas, 2005/6. I have printed about 500 photos, saved a fortune... Here is my 'Accounts'
Potential Costs
Epson 320 Printer £128
Cartridges, 45 @ £6.00 £270
Total £498
Actual Costs
Epson 320 Printer £128
C.I.S.S. £ 45
Total £173
SAVING £498 - £173 = £325
Results..........fabulous prints
Now, you ask, What is C.I.S.S? Stands for "Continuous Ink Supply System" This included (most do) 600ml of ink, 100ml of each colour. The replacement cost for ink is £20 for 600ml, so my "hardware outlay" (which is a 'once only' cost was £25). Now, I'm saving even more....£250 each time I get ink (£270-£20) eat your heart out, Mr Epson.
For the curious, heres a link....

Well, its for my printer... For other printers/suppliers, "Continuous Ink Supply System" is the yahoo search term

Change the printer. Canon printer cartridges are cheaper. Try to find printer in a clearance center or e-bay you can get it for less than 20$. I use i450 the black cartridge is 10$ and color is 19$. I can find refilled for 4 and 10$.
HP cartridges are difficult refill due to the bags they use inside. I used to have HP printer and I tried two different local refill shops they gave me money back as they couldn't refill it properly.

i have never had any luck with any compatible or refilled
cartridges. i found like you there were problems with
them all. originals may be expensive but don,t give problems
as with anything you get what you pay for. as you say they
were cheap but rubbish!!
