Is it possible to remove plating from medal?

I am looking for help to remove plating from medals; it was plated recently and gives the medal a fake look. Is there a do-it-yourself method or does it require a jeweller's expertise?

I would take it to your local jeweler. It can be buffed off, but then needs a good cleaning after the fact.
