This is quite true that inspite of so much corruption and criminal background of our political leaders even the democracy is continuing to flourish. It may be due to our very few politicians who are honest and the public always is thinking towards good future of the nation from mentioned few politicians. On the otherhand, during British period ,the percent of persons in India about freedom were not high but few persons brought the felling of freedom among very high numbers of public.Accordingly, due to our old history, the public is thinking about a very few honest politicians would provide the good future of the nation. Also, the public knows that dictatorship cannot provides any good &right solution according to the history. As a civilised indian society known throughout the world, indian people always have the respect to honest and wise good persons even such said persons are/have in few numbers and indian society always follow their path. Thus, Indian democracy continues to flourish inspite of very high numbers of correct politicians who have corruption and criminal records and their numbers are in increaing order at present.

This is because the entire democratic system is not equal to corrupt & criminal politicians. This system also includes Indian public & the good politicians. As you have mentioned, this system has taken deep roots in our country so small winds or storms can't uproot it.
There is another picture of it. Some of the politicians are worshipped in their states & whatever they do, people of their state accept it willingly because they do not see any fault in that. People from other states or a certain class of people might vote against such politicians but they get the full backing of the states where they rule.
Anyways, Indian public always have the option of electing some other candidate. It has been done in the past. Now to completely do away with unworthy politicians......I do not think it is easy, after all nothing is perfect.

Even animal herds have a leader.
We believe in our leaders and deceive ourselves.
It is not their fault.
Also we bribe others because we too gain something.
Most of us think of short time gains and forget about the moral standards that we have to set up for our politicians.
We dont do anyyhing to keep sorroundings clean, save water, or traffic rules. Why will we bother about deep thinking, paradox etc.
as long as things around seem okay.

What are the proven for democracy in the history of India? It was always the rule of kings and emperors. Perhaps, people will not go for such rule again till their memories are completely faded.
