(Presidential office, I mean, not governors).

John Edwards announcement that he was still running despite the setback he wife had got me to wondering if we have ever had a first lady pass away while in office, who that would have been and what sort of protocol was observed. We've had some presidents die, but I can't think of any first ladies.

the first one I can think of is Woodrow Willson's first wife died while he was in office. Jefferson wasn't married and his sister acted as First Lady when such was needed. but mostly presidents died in office.
