Yes----Vietnam (and obviously we learned nothing at all from this catastrophic mistake.)

If we were to adopt an exit strategy as the liberals are suggesting, don't you think the enemy would lay low until were left and then attack in full force knowing that they would face no opposition?
All an exist strategy would do is provide the enemy with a sure fire plan for victory.

A better question.. how many wars have used the phrase "exit strategy" exactly? I'm pretty sure the popular thing to do used to be TRY TO WIN, not go into it planning on losing.

Funny...I don't remember guys like Washington, Grant, and Eisenhower using the terms "exit strategy" and "real goals".
The "exit strategy" and "real goals" for those leaders was to win. Plain and simple. The troops of WWII were supposed to be home by Christmas, 1944, but I don't remember the Congress threatening to cut off the funding if they didn't.

Yes, it took you years to get out of vietnam because the exit strategy boiled down to "peace with honor"
as for goals, all wars have goals. the problem is that sometimes the goals don't make sense, or are not pallatable because they are not idealistic (fight for democracy, end oppresion, etc.).

All of them.
"Exit strategy" is a recent construct...and total bunk.
War is an ugly, brutal contest of wills. If you "exit" before breaking the will of the enemy, then the enemy has broke *YOUR* will.
