Here's what I know:
-I have an on-board sound card with an up-to-date driver
-Device manager says everything is working properly
-It is enabled in BIOS
-Nothing is muted
-My speakers work (tested them with iPod)& they have power -I've tried to connect them to every plug-in, including the headphones

The computer was a gift from someone after mine crashed. It has never had sound. I miss my music. Please help!

Thanks!

If device manager seems to think its running properly and everything is enabled then it might be worth testing it with another sound card. What sound card do you have? failing that there is a forum i use and have found to be the best around - as yahoo answers tends to throw back allot of nonsense (like the second answer). Heres the URL:

Put the same question on there and someone should be able to help.

does it work with a different set of speakers/headphones? if it does, then its an issue with the speakers you are using.

have you set the system volume? if you're on a pc there should be a tiny speaker icon right next to the time taskbar (bottom right corner). double click on it and a window with the volume control will pop up. make sure that it is not muted and increase the volume. (volume control, wave, cd player, and synth) that should work.
if you can't find the icon on the taskbar go to control panel and click on sounds and audio devices. uncheck 'mute all sounds' and increase the volume.

if that still doesn't work, go to control panel, clikc on system, then on hardware and then on device manager. check that you have all auido codecs, audio drivers, and media control devices working properly...

Sounds like you covered everything. Have you tried hooking up the headphones and seeing if you can hear through them?

Are you sure you have the speakers/headphones plugged into the right computer socket? Maybe the "up to date" driver is not the right one. Is the computer running on XP or what?

Two things:

1/ Are you sure that you have the proper drivers?
2/ When you tested with the ipod, did you use the same cable? Maybe you have a bad cable.

Other than the above, maybe you have something wrong with the physical port on the PC...which is not easily changed.

Have you tried going to Controll panel / Sound / Devices and made sure your onboard card is selected.

Or try going into your bios usually by hitting Delete key while your booting up and looking for your onboard devices and making sure to see if your Onboard Sound is set as available.

Or you can buy yourself a Sound card they are really easy to install and youl get better sound from it.

Sounds lie the problem I was having.
Theres a cord that should connect to the back of the computer.
Mine was light green and it looked like a headphone jack. See if there are any cords unplugged that look like a headphone jack and find its matching color in your computer and plug it in.

Thats all I can really offer... hope it helps.
