No, but it helps. A strong will is very important in acheiving one's goals. But skills, talent, luck and the difficulty of the goal also play a role. If you now decided to become the best chess player in the world, I wouldn't give much for your odds. But if you wanted to acheive master level and were willing to give up most all your free time, I'd say you'd have a pretty good chance of success.

For similiar goals in running I'd say you could do even better, but probably would face a similar limitation.

I think marathons are a huge accomplishment. However, I believe completing an Ironman triathlon is a larger task, mainly because you have to not only run a marathon but also swim 2.2 miles and bike 112 miles. I think any elite athlete can accomplish anything due to their mindset. Just my honest opinion.

To an extent, but I'm a former pro-kickboxer, a sport which isn't purely cardiovascular, II could ask the same question, starting "if you win a national kickboxing championship", but then it'd be one-sided towards people with martial arts skills.

There are people out there who are not so physically fit, wh have acheived more than many of us every will.

Sport is just not a relating factor to this.

No, that's rather tame. I now walk on 200m of burning coal before plunging into a freezing lake and doing 10km butterfly.
