In 1968 a fairly well known local ensemble named Judas Priest (after Bob Dylan's song "The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest" from the John Wesley Harding album) broke up and the band's singer, Alan Atkins, approached Downing and Hill who accepted him as their singer and adopted his former band's name.

The founding members of the current group are guitarist KK Downing and bassist Ian Hill, they were then joined by vocalist Alan Atkins and a drummer and the band was formed sometime in 1970 and they adopted the previous band name of Atkins called Judas Priest, said to be taken from a Bob Dylan song "The Ballad of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest", they toured and played concerts until Rob Halford replaced Atkins in 1973 and later was joined by guitarist Glenn Tipton before the recording of their debut album, the rest is history. They dont have a permanent drummer during those years.

judas priest is a curse from the middle ages - you said it instead of Jesus Christ (don't blaspheme or take the lords name in vain)
