This is how the UK system works
GCSEs - 16 - no real equivalence in most countries.
A levels -18 (just prior to entering university). Equivalent to European Baccalaureate and US High School Diploma.
AS levels - 17 - kind of like half an A level. Not equivalent to much in many countries.
HND - like an AS or half a degree in the US or Canada, or a DUT in France...
Bachelors - a first degree. same as in the US or Canada (but much easier to get in the UK)

British kids are pretty dumb on average (chavs are above average intelligence here), but they often make out their own education to be worth more than non-EU countries when accepting equivalency.

Why don't you just stay in South Africa? The education can't be any worse there.
