I agree, your MIL is the problem, not your baby. Of course, during her generation, babies started solids much younger, so I'm sure that's where she's coming from. Nowadays, babies aren't supposed to start solids undtil after 6 months, and 8 or 9 months is when they generally start (although some wait a full year, and that's fine, too!). Up until a year of age, your breastmilk should be providing at least 75% of your baby's nutrition. Solids are just for fun at this point, and if your son doesn't want them yet it might be that he's not really ready. Some babies reject solids until their digestive systems are more developed or until after the window of allergy development has passed -- while it isn't conscious, they are protecting themselves by rejecting food before they can properly digest it. I put a link at the bottom about starting solids and some more links about the benefits of delaying solids until your baby is really ready. Relax, he'll eat when he wants to and until then you can rest assured that he's getting everything he needs from your breastmilk. Breastmilk provides more than the solids provide for him, so if he isn't gaining weight, it isn't because of the solids. It might be because he is starting to crawl and move around more! Your baby has hit the age where lots of babies tend to thin out a little bit more because they are much more mobile. Ask your doctor, but it sounds like your baby is just fine.

Oh, and NEVER compare your baby to a formula-fed baby. They're like a different species, and what your baby might lack in weight, he makes up for with his health!

Well I don't believe he should be eating anything cooked in pork soup, or eating KFC mashed potatoes.
Its true that babies main source of nutrition for the first year is milk however at 8 months its best to start giving them some solids.
I make my own baby food, its not as hard or as time consuming as you might think. A blender, some veggies and about half a day should feed your baby for about a month.
In my freezer i have broccoli, green beans, yams, lentils, carrots, cauliflower, potatoes, turkey, chicken and beef, apples, pears and nectarines.
I cook it all up without butter , salt or spices. I puree it in my blender and then freeze it in ice cube trays. When frozen I put in freezer bags. Try this and you might see a difference in your babies eating habits. Start off every meal with milk, then thaw out a cube of whatever you want to serve. Gradually you can work your way up to two cubes per meal.

Babies under one year of age do not require anything but breastmilk. Focus on the breastmilk and he should be gaining weight, if he has lost weight over two months and shows no signs of gaining that is a serious problem that should be investigated by the doctor HOWEVER nothing has more calories or nutrients than breastmilk per oz.

It is perfectly normal for an 8 month old to still be nursing ever 1-4 hours. My one year old still nurses ever 60-90 minutes, but he has GERD and he gets sick if he doesn't nurse at least every 3 hours.

Never EVER force your child to eat, it doesn't help anything.

Okay, I'm guessing that you are asking how to intorduce solids to your 8 month old baby (the rest I dont get since you used some bizarre jargon).
First I would suggest that you stop with the KFC and other fast foods and junk foods. Second, set up a FEEDING SCHEDULE - and stick to it. Your baby will not eat if he is not hungry and if you are letting him snack repeatedly throughout the day he won't be hungry. So no more breastfeeding every 2 to 3 hrs for 5 to 10 minutes. Start with one feeding in the morning of about 20 minutes (10 on each breast) about 5 hrs later he should be hungry again and you can Breast feed for about 10 minutes and give him a jar of baby food or baby cereal. Then again about 5 'hrs later feed him either a full meal from the breast or baby food.
I would reccomend you also speak to your pediatrician about your concerns about his weight and growth and talk to her about your dietary concerns as well.

It okay. Most of his nutrition should be coming from breastmilk for now anyway. Solids before 1 year are really just for experimenting.

Maybe he doesn't liked mashed food. Have you tried one of those "baby safe feeders?" Its a little mesh bag with a handle you can put chunks of solid foods in for them to gum and make messes with!-)

As long as your babe is peeing and pooping fine and meeting milestones (like sitting up, rolling, etc... he is fine.)

Your poor nephew is on food meant to make a calf gain hundreds of pounds in a very short time. No wonder he is so big! Of course, babies are all different and he may have been big with real milk too.

Have you given him foods that he can feed himself?
My son is 9 months and didn't really care for mashed up food but once I gave him regular food he was totally happy.

i think your problem is your mil and not the baby's eating habits. tell her to butt out, u r doing just fine. a baby under 1 gets all of the nutrition he needs from breastmilk or formula.

maybe the nephew is being feed to much its ok though baby's have a tendency to let you know what they want a don't be patient with your son and hell start eating more solid foods... just keep workeng with him though.
