They swear you have freedom of speech, but it seems most Americans get very upset if you speak of things they do not agree with. I refer to politics and religion.

Compared to many countries there is a lot of freedom of speech. Political pundits say things that would have them killed in some countries. John Stewart could never survive long in China for example! However, Americans live under a great illusion.

Scroll down to the art of Micah White. But an excellent site on classroom propaganda.

What we take for "free speech" is propaganda that is designed to shape the inhabitants of a nation from infancy to death.. But we know Free Speech is just a myth.

"Actor Tim Robbins gave an excellent speech to an assembly of the press after being excluded from the Baseball Hall of Fame’s ceremonies because of his stance against the War in Iraq. In this speech he stated, “And both of us (He and his wife, Susan Sarandon) last week were told that both we and the First Amendment were not welcome at the Baseball Hall of Fame… A chill wind is blowing in this nation. A message is being sent through the White House and its allies in talk radio, and Clear Channel (concert promoters), and Cooperstown. If you oppose this administration, there can and will be ramifications.”'

Last week a young woman I was speaking to was afraid to go to a site I recommended. It was a Muslim site about prayer. She was afraid someone might look up her records and consider her pro Muslim and take her away from her baby for subversive activities. Is this freedom?

Another person, a young man, put an 'Impeach Bush" sticker on his bumper and was pulled over 5 times in a month for non existent legal infringements. The moment he removed the sticker, the stops stopped. This is freedom?

Someone comes in here and speaks about their sick child and you can bet some idiot will call her a whinging Lieberal or a Regugnantican. There is so much polarization over these trivialities when there are serious things to deal with, like loss of freedom of speech.

Here is Freedom of Speech in Political Motion. As you read this, think about the situation in the Middle East. Things will be a little different.

The Rules of Political Correctness

Rule # 1: In the Middle East, it is always the Arabs that attack first, and it's always Israel who defends itself. This is called "Retaliation".

Rule # 2: The Arabs, whether Palestinians or Lebanese, are not allowed to kill Israelis. This is called "Terrorism".

Rule # 3: Israel has the right to kill Arab civilians, this is called "Self-Defense", or these days "Collateral Damage".

Rule # 4: When Israel kills too many civilians. the Western world calls for restraint. This is called the "Reaction of the International Community".

Rule # 5: Palestinians and Lebanese do not have the right to capture Israeli military, not even a limited number, not even 1 or 2. This is called "Kidnapping".

Rule # 6: Israel has the right to capture as many Palestinians as they want (Palestinians: around 10000 to date, 300 of which are children, Lebanese: 1000s to date, being held without trial). There is no limit; there is no need for proof of guilt or trial. This is called "War on Terrorism".

Rule # 7: When you say "Hezbollah", always be sure to add "supported by Syria and Iran". This is called: "Axis of Evil".

Rule #8: When you say "Israel", never say "supported by the USA, the UK and other European countries", for people (God forbid) might believe this is not an equal conflict. This is called "Helping our Friends".

Rule # 9: When it comes to Israel, don't mention the words "occupied territories", "UN resolutions", "Geneva conventions". This could distress the audience and is called "Anti-Semitism".

Rule # 10: Israelis speak better English than Arabs. This is why we let them speak out as much as possible, so that they can explain rules 1 through 9. This is called "Neutral Journalism".

Rule # 11: If you don't agree with these rules or if you favor the Arab side over the Israeli side, you must be a very dangerous anti-Semite. This is called "Democracy".

Americans are increasingly draconian and so watching what one says is becoming second nature.

Didn't you just use it?

Yes, it exists and is healthy, despite the very best efforts of George W.

George has been told by the US Supreme Court to stop limiting free speech, but continues to do so. The so-called "free speech zones" he has set up well away from anywhere he appears in the US are, according to him, a place where people who dissent are allowed to protest. Since these are invariably at least a half mile from his speaking venue, that's a little pointless.

Actually, ALL of America is a free speech zone, and it's time Congress did something to enforce that. Which means if I want to hold a sign up outside some venue where the President is speaking that says "George Bush is a war criminal" I should be able to to do that without being arrested. Sadly, that is not possible, in this country - only in places like South America, apparently.

We do, but it has pratical limits.

You are free to say whatever you want until what you say endangers others. The classic example is that yelling "Fire" when there is none in a crowded theater is not protected speech, because someone could be hurt in the resulting chaos.

But you are free to say what you believe in and to disagree with others and even the government all you want, as anyone else is.

It's a rare gift, not given in some of the larger countries in our world (I.E China). Cherish it.

There may come a day when those who want to take it from us will.

It depeneds on your country, and the applicable laws.

In the US, the Constitution guarantees the freedom of speech.

Yes, there are specific exceptions -- true threats, incitement, defamation, fraud. And some restrictions can be placed on where and how a message is delivered, as long as those restrictions are neutral and not targeted based on the content.

But almost all other speech is protected to a large degree.

Your Constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of speech protects you from any type of negative action the government could take against you like arrest, imprisonment, torture, loss of personal property, etc. Simply put, you can say whatever you want about anything and the government can't take your life away from you. It DOESN'T protect you from being criticized by other citizens who may not like what you have to say (and may criticize you, call you names, or make you a social outcast because of it) and it doesn't give you the right to tell lies or half-truths about someone else simply because you don't like them and you want to make them look bad (that's libel or slander, depending on how you do it). So say whatever you like, but don't whine if others tar and feather you for shooting your mouth off. It's better to be silent and let people think you're stupid than it is to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Of course there is. Maybe you should go live in a country where what you do on your cell phone is observed by the government, and you can be jailed for speaking out against the government. You have freedom of speech, but that doesn't mean we are all forced to listen.

If we don't have freedom of speech, then what made it possible for Michael Moore and Al Gore to get critical acclaim for their films? It can't be the strength of their arguments, or the power of truth, both films are devoid of either. Yet, there they are, making piles of money and are on the A list for Hollywood parties.

I think you're mistaken in thinking we do not have freedom of speech, but the Constitution certainly gives you the freedom to say otherwise.
