Check with your bank and get pre-qualified for a loan to see what you can afford to spend.
Explore your city and find the neighborhood that best suits your needs. Make a list of the attributes you want your new neighborhood to have. If you have children, check out the schools. If you want public trans., find the stops. You can narrow your home search down to 2 or 3 neighborhoods this way. Finding a great house in a neighborhood that isn't right for you can be a big mistake.
Then you can check the home listings and/or hook up with a local realtor to see homes available.
Good luck to you.

Internet a lot of sites allow you to take a tour of homes and you can get a great idea what they look like. You can also shop in your price range and location. Its a great way to start out then if you see something you like you can get an agent involved.
