I have heard of an air handler as an industrial sized air filter that circulates enough air to constantly filter entire warehouses or factories.

An Air Handling Unit is an HVAC system. It is responisble for heating and cooling a building.

It is the part of your heating/air conditioning unit that distributes air to the inside of the house. It takes in air from inside the house (through the filter) and passes it over coils that either heat or cool the air. It also contains heat strips that provide the "Emergency Heat" that you see on your thermostat.
