Ferdinand Magellan was born about 1480. He was a Portuguese sea captain who led the first expedition that sailed around the world. He was the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean. He first went to sea in 1505 when he sailed to India. From then on he sailed under other captains on other voyages east. In 1519 Magellan left from Sanlucar de Barrameda in southern Spain with 5 ships. He was heading for the Spice Islands by sailing west instead of east. This would prove that the world was round. His fleet sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the coast of what is now Brazil. They sailed down the coast of South America. Magellan had much trouble with his Spanish crew and had to put down mutinies. They passed through what is now known as the Strait of Magellan. They sailed across the Pacific Ocean with great hardship. Eventually they came to what is now the Philippines. On April 27, 1521, Magellan was killed when he took part in a battle between rival Filipino groups on the island of Mactan. After this the expedition loaded up with spices and set off for Spain. But only one ship, the Victoria,
made it back to Spain on Sept 6, 1522. This voyage led to other voyages and proved that the world was round.
