Some of that is rooted in our history.

The primary reason is that between approximately 1776 and 1790, against the odds, an EXTRAORDINARY group of people were gathered in one time and place and had the opportunity and total freedom to invent a country and its rules by consensus and from scratch. They did an absolutely amazing job and we are riding on those coattails ever since. The basis of that paradox between national pride and disunity is rooted the accountable government and free society that was created by these leaders.

Ever since, with varying degrees of success and failure (and arrogance), we have tried to live up to the nobility of that high point of our definition and self-image.

Also, with the notorious exception of "importing" slaves, the people who came to America were volunteers, looking for a better life and by and large making or finding it here.

Why, because this country was based upon freedom and freedom is valued more than anything. Yes we have our internal problems, racism, sexism etc. But, let us be attacked again and you will see how united we'll become.

When we were attacked on 9/11 I was amazed at how united Americans became. People were speaking to strangers and holding conversations which we usually don't do. They were comforting each other out on the streets, it was truly amazing.

Once, everything settled down we went back to our usual every day attitudes.

I don't mean this to be offensive to my fellow Americans but America tends to be complacent. We are self (family) absorbed. Yes Americans are the most giving people I've ever seen but we also tend to be individualists.

It's a shame but it seems to take a National disaster to really bring out what Americans are really about. I'm always proud to an American but when disaster hits, the every day, average American shows their true tenacity, unwavering care and unlimited giving.THAT'S when I'm EVEN more proud to be an American.

Because it is the greatest country in the world. Our political system allows us to disagree with out chopping each other up like Sunnis and Shites. We get terribly mad at each other but we are brothers .We carved out this land from nothing but wilderness(sorry to the Indians). We fought the Japanese and the Germans at the same time and won.We can beat anyone, hands down, and then turn around and help them rebuild their country and become friends rather than put them in subjugation. That's what makes us great.Plus we have Disneyland!

It's like in a family how you can fight all day long with your brother and call him names and be a total jerk to him but let someone else say one bad thing to or about him and you are gonna rip their heads off, we Americans may all not get along with each other and we may see things really different but I'll be damned if I'm gonna let someone else, from somewhere else, talk bad or hurt one of my fellow americans, now ya' get it?
