There are a number things you can do to boost your connection speed. If you are using Windows, Windows' default settings are not optimized for broadband connections. There are a number of free tools which can change the default settings to optimize your dsl connection. The easiest to use is Dr. TCP. You can download it at (http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe). Before making any changes, create a system restore point. In Windows XP go to Start Menu > Help and Support > Undo changes to your computer with system restore > create a restore point > enter a name for the restore point > [Next] > [Close].

Run drtcp by double clicking on the executable file. Enter the following settings:

TCP receiving windows: 65535
Window Scaling: On
Time StampingL Off
Selective Acks: On
Path MTU Discovery: On
Black Hole: Off
TTL: 128
MTU 1492
Adapter Settings: choose the connection type you are using (e.g. wireless modem, ethernet connection...)

When you are finished, click [Save] > Restart.
