That he did it for the sake of self punishment, since he killed his father and married his mother.

Now, the irony relies on the fact that, at the beginning of the story, when the major events took place, he knew nothing of the attrocity he was about to commit- he was "blind" from the truth that was being hidden to him.

Afterwards, when he learned the whole thing, he literally blinded himself, as self punishment, and as a way to stop "seeing" all the things that he had done.

The irony is the prophecy his parents tried to prevent from coming true has been fulfilled. Didnt you read the play?? Its great.

The last thing he saw was the thing he should never have seen- his mother's naked body. You'll notice that he used her dress pins to do it- that would strip her.
