Focusing on "fitting in" means becoming a follower--letting other s decide what you should do, how you should think and act.

Personally, I have too much self-respect for that kind of thing. Funny thing--the more I make my own choices, the more people respond to me positively! :)

Stop trying to fit in and realise that you could be BETTER than those people you're trying to be the same as. Screw fitting in, you can become a god among people someday. You can do something OTHER than what they're going to end up doing. You don't want to fit in, you want to become the next Bill Gates. You want to become a revolutionary, a powerful man, an intelligent one. And fitting in just lowers your chances, because trying to fit with everyone else means you're going to end up like everyone else, bagging groceries or working a middle class job.

In trying to "be themselves", many people have a tendency to act cold, superior, and distant, like they only care about themselves. When they observe others doing the same, the result is that no one initiates a conversation. Instead, try reconciling yourself with the fact that you DO care what others think about you, which is perfectly natural. Then try and look up to others, ask them questions about themselves, give them compliments. People will respect this in you and you can start great friendships by listening well and being perceptive.

How about evaluating the environment you want to fit into from the standpoint of your personal characteristics so as to decide whether you are able to blend with the least possible trouble?
