Lincoln made no secret about his views on slavery. With his election the southern states succeeded and lad siege to various federal properties in the south. During the prosecution of the resulting civil war in the emancipated proclamation he freed all the slavery within the territories that he legally governed and paved the way for the 13th Amendment, although his assassination prevented him from fulfilling this, or even seeing a free USA.
I do not think that any man could have done more to end slavery in the USA than he did.
He was prepared to destroy, ruin his name, and loose his life, the nation rather than to continue the institution of slavery.

No question he helped to end slavery in the USA, however, he wasn't the only person involved in the decision. Pres. Lincoln changed the rhetoric of the Civil War from a war over the union to a war to free slaves. In addition he issued a fairly meaningless document, the "Emancipation Proclamation", that had no legal ability to free the slaves but became a focal point for abolitionists (those opposed to slavery) and also for the slaves themselves.
Again, there can be no doubt that he helped free the slaves, but he wasn't the only one (what about all of the Union soldiers? Congress?)

Gettysburg Address establishes the doctrine of abolition for the whole Union. Then the passage of the 13th and 14th amendments sets it down. Lincoln was instrumental to this process, although it must be clear that his was not a self-less crusade. Lincoln was fighting to secure the union, to protect the financial interests of northerners and deliver a blow to the power of the states vs. the federal government. In other words, it was about slavery not about the slaves, (who in fact remained disenfranchised for a whole century afterwards, impoverished and disempowered to this day)
