The student was accepted to a USA university and I the sponsor did prove the ability to support the student

It is possible, but it is up to the US Consulate in your country to approve or deny a student visa. Were you able to show all the financial documentation (bank statements, enough balance, savings, real estate, etc) that proves that you will be sponsoring his studies for one year or more. Was your friend able to show ties to his/her country? Did your friend show a commitment to come back to his/her country after finishing college in the USA? These and more factors are extremely important, but it is ultimately up to the consulate to make this decision.

Only if the friend has been accepted into a university. Sponsorship is financial; you need to show you have the money to pay for it, and if he/she hasn't been accepted, then there is nothing to sponsor.
