Read an issue of Ms. and you'll feel differently. This month, they have an entire blotter of issues for women in developing countries, and an article about a women's magazine in Iran.

I think it is unfair of you to generalise. First of all the 'Islamic nations' are not all oppressive. In fact Iraq had more female doctors and lawyers then anyother Arab nation, but I guess there's nothing left of that now. Women in the North African nations and Muslim West African countries have the right to education and work and also countries like Oman have female politicians . It is only certain countries like Afghanistan, Saudia Arabia that have discriminating laws against women. Women did not always have such a fantastic life in the West. You will not believe how recent the right to vote, or have your own business, live on your own, get pregnant before your married etc all is. So, maybe rights in as you say 'Islamic nations' will take time in these areas as well. Everyone should fight for their own country, it makes situations difficult whn others become too politically involved.

It is a touchy subject that can not be addressed without criticizing someones culture at the same time. Most people, women, are not willing to go there.

I'm sure there are women in western countries who are working towards changing the ways women in Islamic nations are treated. They may just be working quietly on it since it is a sensitive subject.

ok this is news to me........being a muslim woman, livin in an islamic country i dint knw i was treated badly?
1st u gotta see which country deprives women of their right n most imp thing dont jump 2 conclusions tht its mentioned in the quran. to TONY R- islam doesnt permit wife beating n the quran mentions beating ONLY as the last resort n tht also slightly. unfortunatley many muslim men dun read tht.

Current statistics underscore the significant improvement and the remarkable expansion of educational opportunities at all levels for Arab women in the last two decades. A new born girl in the Arab world today has much better chance than her mother to attend school and finish college. Arab governments are committed and determined to augment educational opportunities and to make them accessible to all eligible women. It is firmly believed that without emancipating women from the bondage of illiteracy no real political, social or economic development can take place.
Many Arab women already have distinguished themselves as poets, novelists, teachers, physicians, chemists, physicists, engineers, doctors, judges, lawyers, journalists, and Cabinet members.

I agree im some muslim countries the rights of women r being snatched away but tht doesnt happen everywhere nor its related 2 da teachings of islam. if by "complain how women r treated" u mean complain abt the way we dress den thts totally freedom of choice. the way we dress doesnt mean we r oppressed. Many muslim women disagree wid how da western women live. n yes western women arent silent n neither muslim women r. No matter how much u intervene its upto the women themselves 2 fite 4 deir rights ( if they r deprived of it) n i believe muslim men shud also be educated in this subject.

In my opinion if they were treated like that in this country then there would be a riot. For them it is just a way of life(which I think is totally wrong). However women in Islamic countries think that the way us women act in this country and the way we are treated is totally out of order and that we should act with more dignity.
By us complaining nothing would change, there would have to be some sort of miracle for that to happen.

you are obviously not paying attention. Women activists were discussing these things well before the US started tramping in the area again in 2001, but no one ELSE was listening. If there wasn't such a media circus surrounding the actions of the US in the Middle East, most people who are so up in arms about this now that its the thing wouldn't give a bleeding rats a** about women in Islamic countries, just like before.

They do.

A lot of women participate in organizations that promote equal rights for all women. Write, speak out, help, fight (not referring to physical fighting here).

There are quite a few international organizations focused on women's rights, with women from all over the world in them or supporting them.

Most PEOPLE spend more time on problems nearer home, but not all.

BTW, there's no such thing as "how women are treated in Islamic nations" as it varies from country to country.

Before we destroyed it, for example, women were treated pretty well -- as far as rights, freedoms, jobs, etc. -- in Iraq. (Now they can't leave home without being covered and accompanied by a male relative.)

Thing is, men in the countries that treat women the worst don't listen to women -- wherever they are from.

There are also robust women's rights movements in many Muslim countries. They get all kinds of aid and support from "western" women.

Who is to say that western women are treated better than Islamic women.

Many western women are disloyal to their partners, there is so much divorce in the western world & from what I see western women are lacking in morality.

I am white english & see no reason why we in the west should impose our ideas on the east.

Furthermore I do not agree that we in the west should invade any nation for Oil (WMD) & ignore others i.e, Dafur & Zimbabwe etc.

We have a lot to learn from Islamic nations but it doesnt mean that we have to adopt their way & they not ours.

We should learn to live with each other.

Well I wouldn't criticise something I don't understand or condemn an entire culture. Who says 'they' are badly treated? Which Islamic nations exactly? There is such a thing as free choice you know. I would imagine that those who remain in their home country, practising their family's chosen religion in a like minded community wonder why western women put up with all that we do.

Why don't men in western countrires complain about how women are treated in islamic nations?? Islamic culture is so different than our western society. It's hard to understand. Lack of education is a big reason, why nothing is ever said about this problem. Most people, men or women, dont know exactly how bad things are for women within that culture.

I think quite a lot of them do but don't get listened to.The average European woman does not really understand or appreciate how women are treated in Islamic countries. I think the majority have got enough problems in their own society to not worry too much about the plight of others. I know this is not ideal but I think it is a fact of life.
