i remember the irony occuring twice. the first is when he declares that whoever killed his father will be banished and then later he finds out that he is the killer and he must banish himself. He sort of brought on his own downfall because the original punishment was not going to be as severe but he added the banishment too it before he knew he was the killer. the second use of irony is in the fact that in his attempt to flee from his parents in order to prevent the coming of the prophesy, he actually caused it to happen. He ended up killing his father and sleeping with his mother.

Not sure that this is a dictionary definition - my definition of irony is getting bitten in the bottom in the most twisted and horrible way possible. It is not simply something going wrong.

Oedipus's goal was to find the man who killed his father. Who DID kill Oedipus's father?

Irony is that he killed his dad and married his mom to become king eventhough the prophet told him what was going to happen(foreshadowing). He gets his eyes gouged out and only then "sees" his mistakes.(irony)
