Usually, Exhaust pipes go from Headers to Y-pipe/collector, to Catalitic Converter, to Intermediate Pipe (Some I-Pipes have Resonators in them which is like a second muffler) to Muffler to tail pipe

You didn't say what kind of car you have , but if it's an import like a Honda or Accura the pipe you are describing is known as a flex pipe. It absorbs the vibration and torque movement from the engine.
On these cars it's located between the Y pipe and cat. converter.

depends on the car, usually just exhaust pipe or sometimes a resonator can be installed before the muffler.

On MY car? It's the secondary catalytic converter and intermediate pipe assembly. But if you don't own a Jaguar, yours may have a different name.
