Overpopulation is a result of poverty, lack of contraception and cultural tendencies, but all of these thigns are interrelated to a larger economic cause. To ask why third world countries are overpopulated brings up a secondary question which has to be answered in order to answer your question, that question is why exactly has population growth declined in industrialized countries? To understand the answer to that question is to answer your question.
In poor countries child mortality is very high, children die often and early. The result is a social expectation that a familay must have many children to increase the chance that at least some of them will survive. Secondly, religion has a stronger pull on people. Mast religions ban contraception, and to people living in countries in poor countries where contraception is not always readily avaliable to begin with, a message that contraception is somehow against god further encourages people to not go through the trouble of getting contraception, which further leads to more pregnancies. The nature of the economy also has a lot to do with it. In a more rural/traditional society, children are expected to take care of their parents when they are old, that expectation holds today in third world countries where there is no social safety net provided by the government. Finally, children are a ready source of labor. WIth lax or nonexistent labor laws and a society based on small scale production, there is an incentive to have children in order to increase production (within the family). Now look at the characteristics of a madern economy. IN the modern (1st world) children are a burden, a liability on the parents. Labor laws prevent children from working, and once they do work they expect to spend money on themselves, not the welfare of the family (generally speaking), social safety nets like social security and unemployment insuranceb yhe government means that children are less liklely to help. and help is indeed less likely to be needed. Religiosity while still existent (at least in america), is different, many Catholics in the US fore example use birth control in spite of the Popes adamant statements that their use is against god and the church. Finally child mortality decreases substantially, ensuring that almost every child carried to turm survives to become an adult. Also, a child in the modern economy presents several costs, education in the US/EU is very costly, in the US the average child costs several hundred thousand dollars to raise. Children also become a legal liability, both in their actions, and in cases of divorce of the parents. These factors more than explain why fertility has fallen in rich nations, while in poor nations fertility remains very high.
The reason I talked about the 1st world as much as the 3rd world, is because it is important to understand that a high fertility rate is the NORMAL state of things. The reason why there has been such an upsurge in population in the 3rd world is that modern technology from the 1st world has substantially reduced the mortality rate of children in the 3rd world from disease. The result is that all of the factors of high fertility remain, but the mortality rate has been ultered, resulting in explosive growth. Therefore the best solution to this problem is making the 4rd world better off. If you want a good example of the proof of what I say, look at Malaysia or Indonesia and their growth rates over time along and track the growth trend with their industrialization and consequent rise in income.

Population controle is not actually a problem in all third world countries. But for the ones that it is, here is my experience.
I was recently in the Philippines. I'm not sure if its really considered a third world country but - they dont generally have toilet seats or toilet paper, and minimum wage is about 5 dollars a day... In my book thats third world.
Anyway, population is extremely high because of the catholic presence there in providing aid. They have transfered their religion to 98% of the country and not using birthcontrole is veyr important to catholics.
Second - you have no TV no Bowling alley and no movies, what are you going to do all day for entertainment?.. honestly.

lack of reliable birth control and poverty.
People have more children, because the survival rate for infants is low, and they hope that if one of 5 kids survives, there will be somebody to take care of them.
Also, in many of those countries, it is considered masculine to have many children, so the women don't even have a say- they are often forced to have unprotected sex.
In agricultural societies, children mean free labor, so that is why people have many children.
There are also many religious and cultural reasons, but it all boils down to monetary factors.

Usually its poverty. I know it sounds weird because they could just us the pull out method, but most people over there do not have the money for birth control pills, condoms etc.
Plus there is a lot of rape that goes on.

I know it sounds harsh, but ignorance and what I deem as religious brainwashing are the two main reasons, thus with proper education and a strong dose of reality, this problem could be drastically reduced...
