In Secret Wars #8 (December 1984), Spider-Man damages his costume in combat and is directed to a facility where he can't find a new costume. He activates a machine that releases the symbiote in the form of a black liquid. When Spider-Man touches the liquid, it covers his body and, reacting to Spider-Man's thoughts about the costume worn by the second Spider-Woman, forms a new costume. To Spider-Man's surprise, the costume can mimic street clothes and provides a seemingly inexhaustible supply of webbing.[1]
Once back on Earth, Spider-Man learns the costume is a sentient alien symbiote that wishes to fuse permanently with him and often controls his body while he sleeps. With the aid of Mister Fantastic, Spider-Man discovers the symbiote is vulnerable to sound, and he uses sonic waves to remove it.[2] The symbiote escapes and attempts to forcibly bond itself to Spider-Man in a church tower. The clanging of the church bells and Spider-Man's rejection of the symbiote weaken both the alien and Spider-Man. The symbiote, using its remaining strength, carries an unconscious Spider-Man to safety from the bells before it slithers away.[3]
This rejection left the symbiote extremely bitter toward Spider-Man, a trait it would share with its future hosts.

In the Ultimate Spider-Man universe, the symbiote has vastly changed. The fathers of Peter Parker and Eddie Brock Jr. had created the suit as a protoplasmic cure for cancer. The first stage would be to cover the host's body and eliminate a disease in the patients body. Stage Two would involve the suit enhancing the wearer's strength and natural abilities. The suit was unfinished as Bolivar Trask stole the project from the scientists, but Eddie Brock Sr. saved a small sample for his son to find.
Peter Parker first tries the suit on and ends up with the well-known black costume. The suit vastly increases his strength and agility, allows him to heal from gunshot wounds and use part of the protoplasm to make "webs." However, under stress, the wearer suddenly turns into the Venom monster. Also in the Ultimate Universe, the suits only weakness appears to be electricity as it burned the suit off of Peter (but it nearly killed him). The suit slowly consumes the wearer from the inside, allowing the need to consume other humans. Only through great control can the Venom Suit be controlled.

Spider-Man bonded with the alien symbiote on a distant world during the Marvel crossover storyline "The Secret Wars" in the mid-1980's. He kept the symbiote for a while, then replaced it with a black costumed he'd sewn himself after the symbiote attempted to permanently bond with him. The abandoned symbiote, feeling betrayed and vengeful, then bonded with Eddie Brock to become the character Venom.

If you're going by what was actually written then Spidey got his costume during the first Secret Wars storyline.
You can also look it up at wikipedia, or www.writeups.org for VERY accurate stats on many comic book, movie and other characters.
