Yep, I like the elephants first too!
Is it just me or were the animals cookies cut more clearly in the past? They look like blobs nowadays.
Vegan? I don't consider a product that contains whey to be vegan. From the Nabisco nutrition list for Barnum's Animals:
ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), FOLIC ACID), SUGAR, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL, YELLOW CORN FLOUR, CALCIUM CARBONATE (SOURCE OF CALCIUM), ***WHEY (FROM MILK),*** BAKING SODA, SALT, SOY LECITHIN (EMULSIFIER), ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR.
Sounds ok to me as a vegetarian. I remember asking about them because Muslims cannot eat pork or pork products.

No. Animal crackers use lard, which is fat rendered from animals.
