Yesterday the car overheated. I stopped, let it cool completely for a couple of hours, filled the reservoir. The heater was not pumping hot air at all.

Today, on the way to work, the car just quit on the freeway. Steam/smoke (white) from under the hood and the tailpipe. I was able to restart the car (with difficulty) to drive to a safe location, but much smoke/steam from the engine and tailpipe when it stopped.

Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!

i hate to ruin your day but it sounds like a cracked head or at least the head gasket either way its an expensive process to repair

It doesn't sound good. Usually White smoke out the tailpipe is an indication that the head gasket has let go. It will need to be diagnosed but it does not sound good.

Most often when this happens the engine has sustained internal damage, i.e. bad head gasket etc... and will require a major repair or engine rebuild/replacement... depending on
the year and value of your car it may be time to go shopping for another vehicle..

cracked head or blown head gasket. both are fixable. talk to mechanic or a friend who knows about cars. it is about a 4 - 6 hour job, it is not hard just time consuming. if you need a new head a junk yard can help you.

You blew a head gasket. major $ to fix. When a car overheats it can only be a few things. Radiator, thermostat, water pump etc. . . But the only one that gives you white smoke from your tail pipe is a blown head gasket. Sucks for you.
