We have a master connected directly to the modem and through a gateway I have a switch which 2 slaves run from. We can get a connection through this gateway but as soon as we re-boot the master the connection is no longer there so I have to fiddle with the settings. The slaves are set to obtain automatic i.p's. On the gateway connection however I have to manually set the i.p etc using the same subnet and default gateway as the master. As I said this works but when re-booted it looses the link/connection, whats happening? any help thanks

the second answer (above )is most likely your problem. and a router would solve this problem, connect your modem to a router( this will be your new gateway) then connect everything else to this new gateway. sounds like you are using ICS to allow other computers to connect to the internet, however the master does not hand out DHCP addresses ! so what is happening here is that your master (the ICS computer ) is requesting an IP address from the modem(DHCP) which means it changes with every boot, and the slaves are looking at the old DHCP address for access, however the master address just changed.....no wonder they keep losing access, a modem will request only one DHCP address for the device connected to it(the master- AND IT CHANGES). make life easy, use a router.

I must raise one question here, you said that the slaves are set to automatic IP, where are they getting the IP's from ????? your not using a router so I would think that you are exposing your computers to someone elses network somehow and are using another network DHCP server for IP's. that means they have access to your computers....I can assure you that you would know if you were running a DHCP server, because set up for a DHCP server is complicated.

Make your changes on the router and save, not Windows.
