I personally think that it is just a competition and Sanjaya is lucky to get this far with his average talent. But why do Indian news channels play the Indian public to be fools with a racist angle?

Even Sanjaya himself looks embarrassed to still be there. He actually said he knows he is not the best singer. If he has any integrity he would just step down. To answer your question, they do it because there are about 2000gazillion Indians out there who just want an Indian, any Indian, to win.
