Absolutely!
Pawns that reach the last row of the board promote. When a player moves a pawn to the last row of the board, he replaces the pawn by a queen, rook, knight, or bishop (of the same color). Usually, players will promote the pawn to a queen, but the other types of pieces are also allowed. (It is not required that the pawn is promoted to a piece taken. Thus, it is for instance possible that a player has at a certain moment two queens.)

In standard chess, you can have up to 9 queens (your starting queen plus 8 promoted pawns).
It used to be possible to promote to a piece of either color (you can now only promote to a piece of your own color) so in the past it would actually have been possible (although extremely unlikely) for one player to have 17 queens on the board!
Many chess sets these days come with two queens in each color for exactly this situation. Most people, lacking an extra queen, will use an upside-down rook.

Yes u can have upto 9 queens but that will never happen. If a pawn is able to be moved all the way up the board and reaches your opponents last rank the pawn is promoted to any piece the player wishes. 90% of the time its to a queen but it could also be promoted to a rook, knight or bishop.

You can have up to 9 queens on the board that is if every single pawn is turned into a queen. And the first queen hasn't been killed.

My understanding is the same as yours. If you get a pawn completely across the board, it gains the ability to move as a queen.
