People are so judgemental toward smokers, and a lot of it is BS. My wife quit smoking at about that same point during her pregnancy. Our baby was born on 9/3/06 at 9 lbs. 7 oz and he has remained above the 100th percentile for his height & weight ever since. He has also hit all of his milestones very early (holding up his head on day zero, able to support his weight on both legs at 2 months, cooing & babbling early, etc).

First of all CONGRATS. You stopped and that is great. I smoked through one of my pregnancies (very little but still did). He is fine. No problems (except he is such a boy LOL). The risk of problems is more towards the end because they don't grow like they should. You don't have anything to worry about. Women have smoked for a long time and have had normal healthy babies. You should have a very healthy, happy baby! Don't let the people on here get you down either. Everyone has an opinion and even when the question doesn't ask for it they will tell you. Be a duck and let it roll off your back. Good luck

I gave up when I was about 10 weeks. My doctor actually said to me not to stop straight away as the shock to my body could do the baby more harm than good. I gradually weaned myself from 15 a day down to 1 a day down to none. I have not touched a cigarette since! My baby was born a healthy 8lb13oz and (touch wood) is a very healthy little boy.
Ignore those who judge, the main thing is that you gave up for your baby, not like those who don't even consider it. When I was in labour I was put up on a ward during the early stages. There were two women there, both heavily pregnant, and both kept popping out for a smoke! and I bet that they carried on smoking around the babies when they were born.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and for having the will power to give up. Keep it up and resist the urge to start again once the baby is born. It is stressful, but your baby needs a healthy mummy!!

First of all congratulations on giving up. It's really hard and you should be proud of yourself.
It's unlikely that you have doen any damage to the baby. Smoking predominantly affects the baby's ability to put on weight and does not cause foetal abnormalities (unlike alcohol). As you have given up in week 20, there is every possibility that you will have a normal birth weight baby.
Just ignore everyone here slagging you off. Stress is much worse for your baby than smoking, so just try and relax and pat yourself on the back for doing this for you and your baby.

Well at least you have quit smoking now - and thats the main thing. Lectures about before you quit are not going to help anyone. Focus on keeping stopped smoking - its a great achievement that you did quit. Speak to your midwife or doctor if you are worried. The benefits to your baby now you have stopped will be immense. Well done and congratulate yourself on the fact that your baby will from now on be healthier and will not be born a nicotine addict! Hope all goes smoothly for the rest of your pregnancy

Im having twins with 6 weeks left they are both the weight messurements for single babies (twins are normally smaller than singletons the normal weight is not normally more than 5lbs for each baby ) as im a special care pregnancy and under a lot of pressure and stress not through pregnancy with other issues mainly the father i have seen 11 baby drs and aprox 7 midwives and i smoked !!!!!!!!!!!!not 1 told me to give up as the stress would do more damage than the smoking

Congratulations for quitting! I smoked most of the way through my pregnancy, though only a couple a day, my daughter was 6lb 4oz when she was born 10 years ago and is a fit and healthy girl. You should be ok but continue with the quitting is the best thing you can do. Speak to to your doctor or midwife about your concerns xx

Ignore all the people slating you for smoking. My girlfriend's mum smoked through all 3 of her pregnancies and all 3 girls turned out just fine. It's only in the last 20 years or so people have kept harping on about it.
I'm sure your little one will be fine.

well first of all congrats to you on quitting smoking. I quit a little over a year ago and I understand how tough that was for you.
I doubt you have caused any damage to your baby in the way you are thinking. Typically, babies of moms who smoke suffer from low birth weight and increase risk of premature labor.
I have a feeling that your baby is just fine and you are worrying just like every other mother out there. Relax and next week you will see that precious baby and he/she will be just fine and will completely fill your heart with joy.
Congrats again to you for making the best decision for you and your baby.
Wow sometimes I think people just try to be hurtful on here, ignore them, I think you are great mother already.

Hi there,
You will be able to check through scans and the measurements that the midwife does as the pg continues to see that you are measuring correctly for your dates etc. In all probability the baby is going to be fine, the circumstances are not ideal but the body and the placenta do a great job in dealing with toxins to keep them away from your baby. That doesn't mean that it can keep them all away but it will deal with the vast majority. Just eat well and keep yourself physically fit, rest when you need to rest and enjoy your pregnancy.
I admire your strength in actually managing to quit smoking many mothers are not able to do this. I do know people who have given birth to healthy babies time after time who smoke. I personally do not agree with it but I don't get to decide what other people do with their lives.
Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy
