Because they are grown up geeks that hide in the room they live in (with their parents, still, of course) and the only way they can work out their frustrations, sexual and otherwise, is through Yahoo Answers.
However they couldn't handle an actual conversation with an "outsider"...part socially retarded/part chicken sh*t.

Actually, I can relate to this question, both as the person allowing and not allowing...
1. They honestly believe they are right - and usually they are.
2. When giving a response, make sure you've taken the time to consider and think about what you're going to say and whether it can be argued... i.e. is it practical, does it serve just you or others too, and do you honestly believe what you're saying or just giving an opinion to be a smart-a**!
3. There's a difference between opinion, and actual thought and consideration, as well as knowing. For example, an opinion isn't really a good answer if it doesn't offer a solution... it offers only a waste of time for both people or all involved. That's simply because an opinion is generally coming off the top of one's skull... it's very rarely considered seriously for a time before it's announced.
These are some of the things I've come across in meeting people, as well as what I know about myself.

I totally agree that one should be willing to listen at least as much as they speak. And they should listen in order to hear. It seems that many overly opinionated folks are afraid. Afraid that they are not firm enough in their convictions to be able to give anothers viewpoint a chance.

Extreme left wing liberals have this mentally that they're smarter than everyone else. Plus they like to look down on average folk as dumb

When you are of the opinion that your thoughts are absolute and without question. It is very unsettling when someone offers and opinion contrary to yours, especially when it may cause you to question yourself. Heaven forbid someone else could be right.
