In reality there aren't any other protocols being widely used as much as TCP/IP. It covers a lot of ground and under a lot of different platforms.

Highly unlikely. IP is being used to carry all kinds of information now - data, voice, video.... Companies have made huge investments in IP. IP already won the war versus IPX (Novell), NetBios (Microsoft), VINES, DECnet and countless other networking protocols.
To move away from IP would cause tremendous financial burden as well. Most networking hardware is optimized for IP, if another protocol came along that was better it would most likely require a "forklift upgrade" of a lot of hardware. Keep in mind that service providers like Verizon, Bell South, Qwest, Bell Canada, British Telecom etc.. are just now giving up on the old TDM networks and moving to IP. There would be a lot of resistance to change on this subject.

No, we will just build on TCP/IP. Like version 5 and 6...etc.
