Those schools are all well respected in that field, so I recommend that you go with the one that you feel best fits you. After all, if the school fits well, you'll likely do well there, and that will certainly help your employment/grad school prospects after you graduate.

Cal Tech is a well respected school in this field. It may rank a bit below Carnegie Mellon, but not by all that far.

I'm a UC Berkeley alumna, so I'd veto Stanfurd at any rate.

Caltech is nice. But the students are a little *too* focused on their work, if you know what I mean. Pretty campus. Clean, serene, and in a very nice neighborhood. It's in Pasadena, so the weather is always nice. CalTech is also close to shops and stuff, so it's not like you'll be in the boondocks by any measure (have you any rebuttal, Cornell?). Still, the premature aging I saw was a little off-putting. All work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy.

Y'know, UC Berkeley has a great computer science department...

Go with the school you like the best. Cal Tech students are... er... unique in their personalities. If you like it there (have you actually visited the campus and the students?), then go. It's not like it has a bad rep or anything.

Personally, I like Stanford b/c it's so well rounded. Great area, great weather, great sports and other activities... Being in the heart of Silicon Valley certainly helps as well if you're interested in CS. However, if you don't like it there, you likely won't do well. So, you should go to the place you like.

Have you ever heard of the phrase "an embarrassment of riches"? If you have the opportunity to be admitted to any one of those four schools good for you. All are outstanding institutions in their/your field. For an undergraduate degree I would say make your choice among them on the basis of your own preferences and circumstances rather than trying to get some sort of ranking.

Good luck.
