if it is nessecary, what things do i need to look out for when buying a new PSU, i am using a Pentium D 3.2ghz, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 2 SATA2 Hard Drives, a floopy drive and a 12x DVD Burner, i am also wanting to use a Sapphire ATI X1950 Graphics Card. Do i need to look at certain aspects when looking for one, also, how easy is it to replace a new PSU, and do i need to do anything before replacing it

Hmmm... the others have mentioned stuff like dimensions, etc., so my advice is to buy a reliable brand like PC Power & Cooling, Enermax, Verudium, etc., since a PSU is very much like the blood of a system. Basically, stinge on a good psu and you could well fry all your parts.

If the Antec TruePower range is still being sold(I'm not talking about the TruePower Trio), make sure you get the 2.0 and above versions. v2.0 fixed many(or was it most/all?) of the issues in v1.0 .

Edit: my recommendation is to get at least 450W for your system. Or if you want to find out how much Wattage you should get, try the PSU calculator at here and top up the resulting Wattage you get, by 30%:

The thing you want to look for is an ATX 2.0 PSU. These have the additional pins (24 as opposed to just 20) on the mobo power connector, and also have sata power connectors, and usually a 6-pin connector designed for use w/ newer graphics cards.

its real easy just unscrew the old one and screw the new one in look for how many devices you have and how many plugs the power supply will have you should be ok with a 400 watt unit
