I found the Carol Klein book - Grow Your Own Veg, to be really good. Also The Allotment Book by A M Clevely. I got both out of the library.

I am a member of our local alllotment society, and there are only two books we refer to. The first is Home Growing by ann bonar, published by marshall cavendish, the second is one of a series of gardening books by the famous Dr D.G. Hessayon. The one you want is The NEW Vegetable and Herb Expert, this is available at ALL garden centres and is bang up to date with all new types and methods. It tells you soils feeding position everything you wish to know. I thinkthey publish new editions every year and are the Worlds best selling gardening books. The one we use cost 5.99 8 years ago. The first book was printed in 1980, is much larger full
of must know knowledge, we combine the two and win most
prizes, for taste as well as shape and weight. Unfortunately this one is probably out of print but can be obtained at libraries.. sorry to ramble on but i'm passionate about my veg.
Happy gardening, its a bit hard at first but by God you'll be
chuffed to bits at harvest and eating time
good luck

Hi
I have just taken an allotment as well and the book i have found most helpful was'Allotment Gardening Susan Berger. I got this from my library. Gives month advice and also advice to grow each veg, fruit and herbs. Also gives recipes for each produce you grow. Good luck and i hope yours isnt as over grown as mine.

A book called "The gardening year" may be of some help to you, an even better book would be to get a hold of "The selfsurfishance year" you would have to check up on the latter one

I am starting my first veg patch in the garden this spring. I am using a book called "Kitchen Garden what to grow & how to grow it" by Lucy Peel.
It has sections on harvesting, storing & freezing produce (big plus for me!) and a Gardener's Calendar.
Here is a link to amazon's page for the book:

Why pay good money for a book when you already have the internet? go to bbc/gardening it is probably the best plac to get any information on any gardening matter.
Good luck.
